The Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) held the Design Forum 08 yesterday, an exhibition for students to network with graphic design companies in Oman. The event was inaugurated by the Undersecretary of Education and was carried throughout the whole day. TBWA\Zeenah, Landor, the Scientific College of Design, Alzahra College, and other design related companies and institutions and Oman3D participated in the exhibited.

The Sultan Qaboos University ‘Design Forum 08′ conference and exhibition will be held tomorrow the 15th of January at the Conference and Exhibitions Halls of SQU. The conference will have presentations from a number of professionals in the design industry and will provide visitors and students with the opportunity to network with other professional graphic designers in Oman. Entry is free to all, the program will start by 9am and the exhibition should be open until 5pm.

The latest graphic design event in Oman is going to be organised by the Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) and is going to be titled “The Design Gathering: Designs that Deserve to Last”. The gathering that will be held on the 15th and 16th of January at the Exhibition Hall of SQU will include several workshops, a competition, and an exhibition for the works of students in SQU. Entry is open to the public.

National Publishing and Advertising LLC in Oman is looking for a graphic designer/visualiser who is 22 years or older, has a diploma or a degree in design and is fluent in Arabic and English. No working experience is required, but applicants must have knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Quark Express and some Arabic design applications. Oman3D recently interviewed Hani bin Habib bin Abdul Nabi Macki, an Omani photographer working in financial services in the UAE. His photoblog was selected by Gulf News as one of the best in the region and his work has been used in promotional campaigns, regional letters, and the Global Calendar of the HSBC bank. Autodesk Middle East is collaborating with Oriental Oryx, an IT business solution provider in Oman, to hold a launch event for AutoCAD 2008 and Civil 3D 2008 here in Muscat. The seminar to be held on Sunday the 27th of May at Barr-Al-Jissah will highlight the new features of both applications used for 2D and 3D design and project planning. The Municipality of Muscat is going to hold a 3-day conference in November later this year on the policies and legislation related to the architecture and construction of cities and the challenges for maintaining a cultural identity while taking a modern approach to architecture. The Ministry of Higher Education advertised today the availability of scholarship opportunities for Omanis to acquire a master’s degree in design majors such as graphic design and multimedia production. Successful applicants will be required to practice as assistant instructors at one of the colleges belonging to the Ministry of Higher Education, the period of repay employment is usually equivalent to the same number of years required to complete the degree. The conditions required to apply for this scholarship are that the applicant has the Omani nationality, that he/she acquired a B or higher overall grade in a bachelors degree for the same major he/she intends to do the master’s degree in, that he/she is not bound by any government job, and that his/her age does not exceed 25 years. The country to which successful applicants will be sent to do their master’s degree is not specified in the advertisement, but it is implied that the degree will be taught in English.

RealityCG, an Omani creative unit that specializes in high-end 3D computer graphics, broadcast, print and media design, is going to run a series of training workshops on various 3D design topics and techniques to promote the understanding of 3D here in Oman. The workshops are expected to cover topics such as effective polygonal modeling, lighting and shading. The first session of the CGI workshop series is expected to be setup by the end of January or the middle of February.
